On Christmas Eve after months of delay, 21 tons of pre-packaged lunches arrived in La Gonave. The packets contain rice, beans and vitamins which are mixed with water, cooking oil, spices and prepared by expert cooks at each school. 25 cents covers the cost of the dry goods, the transportation, the cooking supplies and a modest salary for the cooks. This shipment will provide a lunch, which may the only meal of the day for 1500 students until the end of the school year in June.
